First Strike vs Deathtouch in MTG: Why Deathtouch Isn’t Always Deadly
Deathtouch looks unstoppable, but first strike, double strike, and indestructible can completely counter it. Learn how combat really works in MTG.
Creatures like Vampire Nighthawk are famous for their efficiency. Flying, lifelink, and deathtouch make it both an offensive and defensive threat.
Baleful Strix is even more defensive. As a 1/1 with deathtouch that draws a card when it enters the battlefield, it discourages opponents from attacking entirely.
Despite this, all of these creatures share a limitation: they must deal damage to destroy their target.
If they never deal damage, deathtouch never applies.
Why First Strike Completely Counters Deathtouch

First strike allows a creature to deal combat damage before creatures without first strike.
Combat is divided into two steps:
• First Strike Damage Step
• Normal Damage Step
If a creature with first strike deals lethal damage in the first step, the opposing creature is destroyed immediately and never deals damage back.
For example, Baneslayer Angel is a 5/5 creature with first strike.
If Baneslayer Angel is blocked by Baleful Strix, the Angel deals five damage first. The Strix is destroyed immediately.
Because the Strix never survives to deal damage, its deathtouch never takes effect.
This allows Baneslayer Angel to survive completely unharmed.
Double Strike Extends This Advantage Even Further

Double strike allows creatures to deal damage during both damage steps.
Creatures like Skyhunter Skirmisher and Blade Historian gain the benefit of first strike while also dealing additional damage during the normal damage step.
When facing deathtouch creatures, double strike creatures still deal damage first.
If lethal damage is dealt in the first strike damage step, the deathtouch creature never survives long enough to deal damage back.
This makes double strike one of the safest combat abilities when facing deathtouch threats.
Indestructible Ignores Deathtouch Entirely

Indestructible prevents creatures from being destroyed by damage.
Creatures like Darksteel Colossus and Avacyn, Angel of Hope cannot be destroyed by damage—even damage from deathtouch creatures.
If Vampire Nighthawk deals damage to Darksteel Colossus, the damage is still marked, but the Colossus is not destroyed.
It remains on the battlefield.
Indestructible doesn’t prevent damage.
It prevents destruction.
This makes indestructible one of the most reliable counters to deathtouch.
Combat Knowledge Creates Real Advantage
Understanding these interactions changes how you evaluate combat entirely.
Deathtouch is powerful—but it is not invincible.
First strike allows creatures like Baneslayer Angel to eliminate threats before they can respond.
Double strike builds on that advantage.
Indestructible creatures like Darksteel Colossus ignore lethal damage completely.
The more you understand combat timing, the more confidently you can attack, block, and control the battlefield.
Magic rewards knowledge as much as strategy.
